Formed in 1987 in Melbourne, Victoria, 1927 reached the height of their popularity during the late '80s and early '90s. Their debut album, ...ish, released in 1989, spawned the hit singles 'If I Could,' 'Compulsory Hero' and 'That's When I Think of You'. The latter received the 1988 ARIA Award for Best Debut Single, a win shared with The Rockmelons' 'Tales of the City'.
1927 was born when founding member Garry Frost, formerly of Moving Pictures, saw Eric Weideman performing a cover of the Police's 'Roxanne' on Hey Hey It's Saturday. As the story goes, he drove to Melbourne from his Sydney home to recruit Weideman as his new singer, completing the band's line-up with his brother Bill on bass, and James Barton on drums.
All too soon, in late 1989, Frost left the band, but not before producing 1927's second album, The Other Side, in which Weideman had taken over as principle songwriter. Phil Campbell stepped in to replace Barton behind the skins in 1992 as the group released their self-titled third record. By the following year, 1927 had disbanded. In 2009, the band embarked on a series of ...ish 20th anniversary concerts.
