Birds of Tokyo

Artist Information

Perth has been the breeding ground for prominent Australian bands for some time. Born from parent bands such as heavy rock/metal band Karnivool and dark experimental band Tragic Delicate, Birds of Tokyo would soon be another West Australian band to add to the list.

"The Birds", as they often refer to themselves as, is fronted by Ian Kenny and also comprises Adam Spark, Anthony Jackson, and Adam Weston. 2005 saw two releases from the four-piece including the One Way / Stay EP, which led to the saturation of 'Stay' on Australian airwaves. The song was such a hit that the band picked up a coveted Western Australian Music Industry Award (WAMi) for Rock Song of the Year in 2005.

Their debut album, Day One, was released in 2007, and cast the Birds well into the spotlight, earning them spots on festival stages and headlining tours across the country. Universes, their darker-themed second album (which remained independently released alongside Day One) debuted at number three on the Australian charts in 2008, leaving Day One's number 88 spot far behind.

Universes reached gold status in early 2009 - no mean feat for a band whose life has been the tour circuit and recording studio since its inception. With their alternative rock sounds in hand, an energetic stage show and an ever-growing fanbase, one thing is for sure - Birds of Tokyo are flying high.
